Kolkata, Sept. 13 -- Though Durga Puja is almost a month away, the monsoon this year seems in no mood to leave Bengal just yet. On Sunday, spells of rain lashed parts of the state, with Kolkata witnessing a change in weather from sunny morning skies to heavy showers and gusty winds in the afternoon.
The weather is likely to remain unsettled on Monday, with light to moderate rain expected across several parts of South Bengal. Kolkata may see intermittent showers, while some areas could also experience thunderstorms and gusty winds. However, there is no indication of widespread heavy rain in the city.
The coastal districts are likely to remain more vulnerable to rough weather.
South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore may witness thunderstorms and strong gusts, and residents have been advised to remain cautious while stepping out.
The rain on Sunday came after a relatively pleasant morning, when patches of autumn sunshine and fluffy clouds were visible across Kolkata and adjoining districts. By afternoon, however, locally formed clouds triggered heavy showers in several parts of the city. While the monsoon is gradually losing its grip over South Bengal, the weather office expects intermittent rain to continue for some more time. The monsoon could finally withdraw from the region around the third week of September.
A low-pressure area currently over southern Chhattisgarh is not expected to have any significant impact on West Bengal's weather.
