Kolkata, Sept. 1 -- Indian Railways has approved an 11-km bypass line between Adra end and Joychandipahar in South Eastern Railway at a cost of Rs 272 crore to strengthen freight movement and reduce congestion on the section.
The Adra-Joychandipahar-Sanka bypass will provide a dedicated route and a bi-directional connection to the upcoming third line.
The project is expected to facilitate an additional 8.88 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of freight traffic after completion and support the projected movement of 6.065 freight rakes a day.
The bypass is also expected to cater to the anticipated increase in industrial traffic, including freight movement linked to SAIL's iron ore demand of 23.40 MTPA and BCCL's projection of 45 rakes a day.
According to the Railway Ministry, the existing network has a utilisation level of 71 per cent, while surface-crossing conflicts on the Adra-Joychandipahar section affect freight speeds and cause operational detentions.
The bypass is intended to remove these bottlenecks and prevent further congestion.
The line capacity of the Joychandipahar-Adra section is currently 47.50 per cent and is expected to rise to 56.45 per cent by 2028-29.
The project is part of the Energy, Mineral and Cement Corridor identified by Indian Railways.
