Kolkata, June 29 -- The Calcutta High Court on Monday extended its interim protection against eviction in 25 petitions involving occupants of railway land across several parts of West Bengal, allowing the status quo to continue until the end of July.

The batch of matters, heard by Justice Partha Sarathi Sen, will next come up for hearing on July 15.

During the hearing, counsel for the Railways advanced detailed submissions on the legal issues surrounding the proposed eviction drives.

The cases had earlier been heard by Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharyya, who had asked the Railways to spell out the procedure it intended to follow while dealing with different categories of occupants, including unauthorised settlers, former licence holders and other affected groups.

The petitions relate to railway land in Ballygunge, Bamangachhi, Baruipur, Dankuni, Guma, Bongaon, Durga Nagar, Mathurapur, Jadavpur and other locations, including settlements near Nimtala burning ghat and Brace Bridge station. Several residents and small traders approached the court after receiving eviction notices, including families near Brace Bridge who were directed to vacate within 48 hours.
