Raiganj, Sept. 28 -- Former students of Raiganj University met Vice-Chancellor Arnab Sen on Monday and submitted a memorandum opposing any proposed change in the logo and establishment year associated with Raiganj College.
The alumni said the existing logo and the year 1948 represented the institution's history and heritage and were associated with generations of students.
Gaurshankar Mitra and Pijush Kumar Das, former students, said Raiganj College was established in 1948 and its traditional logo featured a burning earthen lamp, or Pradip. It was upgraded to a full-fledged university in 2015.
The alumni learnt that the university authorities were considering 2015 as the establishment year and planning a logo.
They urged the Vice-Chancellor to preserve the college's identity.
"We submitted a memorandum requesting that the year 1948 and the old logo be retained to preserve the history, heritage and cultural identity of the institution," Mitra and Das said.
They suggested mentioning 1948 as the original establishment year and 2015 as the year of upgradation.
Vice-Chancellor Arnab Sen said the university was using 2015 as its establishment year following directions from higher authorities, as it was formally established that year.
He said the proposed logo would be discussed by the executive committee before any decision.
