New Delhi, Sept. 15 -- Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday directed officials to ensure the timely completion of a major Chhath Ghat project on the Munak Canal stretch near Inderlok Metro station, as the city prepares for Chhath Mahaparv.
Gupta, accompanied by senior officials of the Irrigation and Flood Control Department (I&FC), inspected the site and reviewed the ongoing works. She directed the department to adhere to the project timeline and ensure that the facilities are ready for devotees ahead of the festival. The I&FC has undertaken the rejuvenation and beautification of the dry stretch of the Munak Canal between the downstream side of the Outer Ring Road and Inderlok Metro station at an estimated cost of Rs 42 crore.
Under the project, the canal stretch will undergo extensive cleaning, including the removal of accumulated sludge and
waste. Arrangements will also be made to facilitate the flow of clean water through the canal.
Modern Chhath ghats with concrete steps are planned on both sides of the canal to provide dedicated spaces for devotees to perform rituals. A precast concrete boundary wall will also be constructed along the stretch, while the canal banks will be developed with greenery, landscaped areas and parks. The project, spread across around five km, will also include seating facilities, lighting and other civic and aesthetic improvements.
"The Munak Canal is being prepared ahead of Chhath Mahaparv so that devotees can offer Arghya in a clean, peaceful and dignified setting. A stretch that had long remained neglected is now being restored with better civic facilities," Gupta said.
