Kolkata, Sept. 16 -- Durga Puja organisers may soon have to undergo mandatory training in basic fire-fighting techniques, with the state Fire and Emergency Services Department seeking to make such training an essential part of preparations for the festival.
The move was discussed at a special meeting of the fire department in New Town, where officials stressed the need to ensure that puja organisers and volunteers are capable of responding to a fire before emergency services arrive.
Although fire-safety equipment is routinely installed at puja pandals, officials said many organisers lack the practical knowledge to operate them effectively.
