Kolkata, Aug. 31 -- The state Health department has initiated a probe into the alleged wrong surgery at NRS Medical College and Hospital, with the authorities seeking a report from the hospital. Health minister Sharadwat Banerjee said he spoke to the NRS principal after learning about the incident and assured that appropriate action would be taken against the doctors and medical staff if negligence is established in the preliminary inquiry.
The development comes after allegations that doctors had removed the appendix of Gopal Porel, a resident of Ward 35 in Beleghata, instead of removing his gallbladder stones. The alleged medical error had triggered concerns over negligence at the government hospital.
Meanwhile, Porel has undergone gallbladder stone removal surgery at Anandalok Hospital in Bidhannagar. Beleghata MLA Kunal Ghosh said the operation was successful and the stones had been removed. Porel is currently recovering at the private hospital.
Ghosh had earlier intervened after the alleged error came to light and raised the matter with the hospital authorities and conveyed it to the Health minister. He also said Porel's family has sought financial assistance from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund as being a worker of the state's 100 days work, he couldn't bear the financial burden.
He said he has forwarded the family's application to Nabanna and the concerned authorities along with a recommendation letter in his capacity as MLA.
The Health minister also thanked Ghosh for bringing the matter to the government's notice.
