Kolkata, Aug. 31 -- Private bus services were suspended indefinitely across Nadia from Monday after bus owners and workers protested against the alleged unauthorised operation of totos, autos and engine vans on state and national highways, claiming that these vehicles were taking away passengers and making bus operations financially unviable.
Bus operators alleged that toto and auto drivers were picking up passengers near bus stands and in front of buses despite restrictions. They said falling passenger numbers had made it difficult to meet fuel costs and workers' wages. Around 500 private buses are currently operating in the district, according to bus workers.
The suspension has also pushed up fares for alternative transport. Passenger Shariful Shiekh said: "I did not know that the buses were off the roads. The toto is now asking for Rs 120-125, while the bus costs Rs 45. What can I do? I have to get home." Passengers also complained about the inadequate availability of government buses.
The operators have sought stricter enforcement.
The protest comes despite recent enforcement measures. On August 24, Transport Minister Arjun Singh reviewed enforcement against totos and vans with senior officials at Krishnanagar Circuit House. Earlier, on August 7, Transport Department Principal Secretary Ravi Inder Singh asked the state police to strictly enforce restrictions on totos operating on national highways, state highways and other major roads.
Bus owners said the indefinite suspension was intended to draw the administration's attention to the issue.
