Malda, Oct. 11 -- A controversy has erupted at Bhaluka Gram Panchayat in Harishchandrapur-II block of Malda district following allegations that the husband of the elected woman pradhan signed official documents in her place. A purported video circulating on social media has triggered questions over administrative transparency and compliance with rules governing the functioning of Panchayats.
The authenticity of the viral video has not been independently verified by Millennium Post. CPI-M leader Nripen Mahaldar submitted a written complaint to the Block Development Officer (BDO), demanding an investigation into the alleged irregularities and appropriate action against those found responsible.
According to the complaint, Matiur Rahaman, husband of Congress pradhan Mini Aktara Khatun, was allegedly seen sitting on an official's chair and signing a document before handing it over to a woman. The incident has raised questions over whether an elected representative's spouse can perform official duties on her behalf.
Denying the allegations, Mini Aktara Khatun said: "The allegations are completely false. My husband did not sit in my chair. He was only handing over documents bearing my signature to the beneficiaries.
This is the digital age, and anyone can create such fake videos."
Matiur Rahaman also rejected the charges, claiming that he had merely examined a document. "That was the assistant's chair. I was only looking at the paper. These are false allegations and a conspiracy by the Opposition," he said.
Mahaldar, however, alleged that the pradhan's husband effectively ran the Panchayat. "I recorded a video of him and posted it on social media, following which it went viral. I have now lodged a written complaint demanding an investigation," he said. He also alleged that he had been receiving threats since the video surfaced and urged the administration to take steps to ensure his security.
A subdivision-level administrative official said: "The matter concerning Bhaluka Panchayat is being examined. If the allegations are found to be true, legal action will be taken."
