Kolkata, June 29 -- Three schoolgirls aged between 10 and 11 were injured after a hired pool car overturned after a collision with a private car in the Maidan area on Monday morning.
The accident took place around 7.40 am near J&N Island under Maidan police station limits. The pool car, carrying around eight to ten students, was heading towards Park Street when it was hit by a private car coming from the Red Road side. The impact caused the vehicle to overturn. Three students sustained injuries and were taken to SSKM Hospital. Police said all three were discharged after receiving treatment.
Police have seized the private car and detained its driver for questioning. The damaged pool car was also taken into custody. Police have launched an investigation to ascertain the circumstances leading to the accident. Investigators are examining the sequence of events and whether any traffic rules were violated.
While acknowledging that accidents can occur at any time, Sudip Dutta of the Pool Car Owners Welfare Association said the incident had again highlighted the issue of private vehicles being used for commercial school transport services. "Licensed operators spend on permits, fitness certificates and insurance, while many private vehicles continue to operate. Authorities should ensure that all vehicles carrying students comply with the rules," he said.
