Malda, Oct. 30 -- Following the formation of a BJP-led board at English Bazar Municipality after a no-confidence motion against the previous MAITC leadership, political speculation has now shifted towards Old Malda Municipality. The question doing the rounds in political circles is whether Old Malda could be the BJP's next target.

Speculation has intensified following a series of social media posts by a section of BJP workers and supporters. While some posts have hinted at possible political developments in the municipality, others have openly opposed the induction of other party councillors into the BJP. This has triggered questions over whether any discussions are underway regarding a possible defection of Trinamool councillors.

However, Old Malda Municipality chairman and MAITC leader Bibhuti Ghosh has dismissed the speculation as baseless. "There is no possibility of a no-confidence motion or any change of political allegiance at present. However, if anyone brings a no-confidence motion through democratic means, there is no question of opposing it," Ghosh said.

BJP North Malda organisational district vice-president Tapas Gupta also ruled out any such move by his party. "Although rumours are circulating about the municipality, there is no truth in them. The BJP does not believe in forming a municipal board by engineering defections. Party workers may express their views emotionally on social media, but there is no organisational move to bring these councillors into the BJP or initiate a no-confidence motion," Gupta said.

Although both parties have sought to dismiss the speculation, social media discussions continue to fuel political curiosity on whether Old Malda Municipality will witness any political upheaval in the near future.
