India, June 30 -- The Special Cell of the Delhi Police has foiled an alleged Rs 50 lakh extortion bid orchestrated in the name of the Gogi gang and arrested a Delhi-based businessman's wife along with an alleged conspirator. Police launched the investigation after receiving a tip-off from an anonymous source about the extortion plot. The accused have been identified as Sapna Jain, a resident of Laxmi Nagar in Delhi, and Rajat (29), son of Bhagwan Das and a resident of Sonipat, Haryana. According to police, the businessman, who runs a wholesale business in Laxmi Nagar, began receiving calls and messages from an international number on June 14. The caller claimed to be a member of the Gogi gang, demanded Rs 50 lakh and threatened to kill the businessman and his family if the money was not paid. Based on the complaint, an FIR was registered at Laxmi Nagar Police Station on June 18 under Section 308(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The investigation was later transferred to the Special Cell's New Delhi Range. During technical surveillance and intelligence gathering, investigators identified Rajat as a suspect. He was arrested in Sonipat on June 25. Police said Rajat has previous criminal cases under the Arms Act and for snatching, and was allegedly in contact with several members of the Gogi gang, including jailed gangster Rohit Moi. During interrogation, Rajat allegedly confessed that Sapna had assigned him the task of extorting money from her husband and later planning the murder of her mother-in-law and an assault on her husband. Sapna was subsequently arrested. Investigators said the couple, who have been married since 2007, had ongoing domestic disputes. They alleged that Sapna shared her husband's movements with Rajat to facilitate the conspiracy. Police also recovered mobile phones containing alleged incriminating chats between Sapna and the accused. Further investigation is underway.
