Varanasi, Sept. 3 -- Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday spoke to Varanasi District Magistrate Satyendra Kumar over the phone and reviewed the flood situation in the city, including the rising Ganga water level, affected areas and relief camp arrangements.
Modi, who represents Varanasi in the Lok Sabha, directed the administration to ensure that flood-affected residents face no difficulties and that relief and rescue operations are conducted on a war footing.
He sought details of food, drinking water and other essential facilities being provided at relief camps and instructed officials to arrange additional relief material wherever required. He also stressed continuous monitoring of the situation and timely delivery of assistance to affected people.
The Ganga reached 70.42 metres at 4 pm on Thursday, around 16 cm above the warning level of 70.262 metres, raising concerns in low-lying areas.
At Assi Ghat, nearly five feet of water accumulated over the Subah-e-Banaras platform, prompting authorities to barricade the area and stop public entry. Water has also started approaching the road from the old Assi Ghat side.
