Malda, Sept. 4 -- Police seized a large consignment of painkiller tablets allegedly being transported through a courier service. A man from Sujapur in Malda's Kaliachak area was arrested in connection with the case. The estimated market value of the illegal consignment is around Rs 42 lakh.
The arrested person has been identified as Sharif Khan. According to police, the operation was conducted jointly by teams from Malda and Balurghat police following information obtained during the interrogation of a suspected drug trafficker.
During questioning, the accused allegedly revealed that a large quantity of painkiller tablets was being sent from Kolkata to Malda through courier services. Acting on the information, the joint police team raided the warehouse.
Police recovered 9,750 painkiller tablets packed in 70 boxes. Investigators found that the consignment had been sent from Kolkata by declaring its value as only Rs 25000.
The shipment was booked in Sharif Khan's name. Police said he failed to provide satisfactory answers regarding why such a large quantity of tablets had been ordered and where they were intended to be sold. According to police, the recovered medicines can also be misused as intoxicants and their sale without a doctor's prescription is prohibited.
