Kolkata, Sept. 17 -- The West Bengal government has provided assistance of Rs 1 lakh to Gopal Porel, a 100-day work beneficiary from Beleghata, following a controversy at NRS Medical College and Hospital. A cheque was handed over to Porel at Nabanna on Thursday after Beleghata Trinamool MLA Kunal Ghosh appealed to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari for assistance.
Porel, a resident of Ward 35 under the Beleghata Assembly constituency, had approached NRS with a complaint. His family alleged that he underwent an appendectomy despite being diagnosed with gallbladder stones. He was admitted to a private hospital, where he underwent surgery to remove the stones.
Ghosh wrote to the Chief Minister seeking assistance from the state relief fund, which was approved.
However, the NRS Resident Doctors' Association disputed the allegation. It said the 47-year-old patient had acute abdominal pain, while an ultrasound detected appendicular pathology and two gallbladder stones. An emergency appendectomy was performed, with histopathology later confirming appendicitis. An inquiry committee found no deviation from treatment protocol or error in patient management, it said.
