Kolkata, Aug. 30 -- In an alleged case of medical negligence, a 47-year-old man admitted to state-run NRS Medical College and Hospital for gallbladder stone treatment was allegedly operated on for appendicitis instead. The incident has raised questions over how such a mix-up could occur despite the patient undergoing multiple diagnostic tests before surgery.
The patient, Gopal Porel, a resident of Ward 35 in Beleghata, earns his livelihood through 100 days work schemes. Suffering from gallbladder stones, Porel approached NRS Hospital hoping to receive treatment at a government facility. According to allegations, following a series of tests, doctors performed an appendix operation instead of the intended gallbladder stone surgery.
Porel was subsequently discharged, but his health problems persisted and he continued to experience severe discomfort. He later approached Beleghata TMC MLA Kunal Ghosh, following which he was taken to Anandolok Hospital in Salt Lake for further evaluation.
Doctors there reportedly found that the gallbladder stones were still present, while Porel had undergone an appendix operation at NRS.
He is scheduled to undergo another surgery at Anandolok Hospital on Monday.
Ghosh, who visited the hospital on Sunday, questioned how such a serious error could occur after diagnostic examinations.
He urged Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and Health Minister Sharadwat Mukherjee to provide financial assistance to Porel from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund, citing his poor financial condition and inability to work for some time after the surgery.
