Kolkata, June 8 -- A major political and administrative crisis has emerged in the North Dum Dum Municipality after 20 councillors, including the civic body's chairman Bidhan Biswas and the vice-chairman, resigned on Monday.
The resignations were submitted to the municipality's Executive Officer, throwing the 34-member civic body into uncertainty.
Chairman Bidhan Biswas stated that he had stepped down due to personal and health-related reasons. However, sources close to several councillors suggested that the decision was influenced by the prevailing political situation in the area. According to them, several TMC workers have been forced to stay away from their localities, while one councillor was allegedly attacked recently. They claimed that despite these developments, there was little support or intervention from the party leadership.
With 20 representatives resigning simultaneously, residents fear that the functioning of the municipality could be severely affected, creating an administrative deadlock in North
Dum Dum. The development comes amid broader political turbulence in West Bengal's civic administration.
Earlier, Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim had also resigned from his post, adding to the uncertainty surrounding local governance in the state. The back-to-back resignations have intensified speculation over growing political instability within several civic bodies.
