Kolkata, Sept. 18 -- Tourism minister Shankar Ghosh has announced a series of festivals and tourism initiatives in North Bengal, with events planned around the region's distinctive attractions.
Speaking after inaugurating the Kolkata Kite Festival 2026 at Eco Park, Ghosh said an Orange Festival would be held in Shitong, while a Tea Festival was planned for Darjeeling and Siliguri.
The department is also planning a walkathon from Meghma to Sandakphu. Ghosh said more festivals were being planned in the Dooars and Malda, and invited suggestions on events showcasing local attractions.
At the kite festival, Ghosh and Minister of State for Tourism Purnima Chakraborty flew kites.
Ghosh said the festival aimed to reconnect younger generations with traditional pastimes and encourage families to step outdoors, as digital entertainment increasingly replaces
heritage activities.
