Noida, Nov. 3 -- Commuters in Greater Noida West could soon get relief from prolonged traffic snarls at Gaur Chowk, one of the busiest intersections in the area, with the main construction of a six-lane underpass completed and the authorities targeting its opening before Diwali.
The 700-metre-long underpass, being built at a cost of Rs 92 crore, is in its final stage, with road markings, lighting, wall paintings and other finishing work remaining. Once operational, the facility is expected to allow vehicles to bypass the congested intersection, improving connectivity between Greater Noida West, Noida, Gaur City, Surajpur and the Delhi-Meerut Expressway.
The project, which began in July 2024, was initially scheduled for completion within 18 months. However, construction was affected by restrictions imposed under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), rainfall and technical challenges, including the shifting of utility services and construction of ramps. The underpass has been constructed parallel to the Taj Highway, alongside a 60-metre-wide road. It extends around 350 metres on either side of the junction and is designed to provide a direct passage for vehicles travelling between Greater Noida, Gaur City and the Delhi-Meerut Expressway. Once operational, motorists will be able to avoid traffic signals and congestion at the intersection.
Gaur Chowk caters to a population of more than five lakh people living in Greater Noida West and adjoining residential sectors. It also handles substantial traffic coming from Noida, Surajpur, Crossings Republik and Ghaziabad. During morning and evening peak hours, commuters often spend considerable time negotiating the junction.
