New Delhi, Sept. 15 -- The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has advised Delhi and the NCR states of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan to avoid scheduling physical sports activities and competitions in November and December 2026, citing the deterioration in air quality typically seen during the winter months and its potential impact on children taking part in outdoor events. Competitions already scheduled for the two months may be rescheduled, the commission said in its September 10 advisory.
The advisory follows concerns raised by the Supreme Court in the MC Mehta vs Union of India & Ors case over children participating in physical sports competitions when air quality is poor or severe. On November 19, 2025, the court had asked CAQM to issue directions to Delhi-NCR schools to postpone sports and games planned for November and December.
Following the court's observations, CAQM had consulted the Ministry of Education's Department of School Education and Literacy, Delhi and NCR governments, Sports Authority of India, NCR pollution control boards and the Delhi Pollution Control Committee. The commission had subsequently advised governments to postpone such events based on air quality conditions at the venue.
For 2026, CAQM said it was reiterating its earlier advice and asked governments to ensure that no physical sports competitions are scheduled during November and December. Events already on school calendars can be shifted.
The commission also asked authorities to ensure students are not disadvantaged by rescheduling. It suggested providing alternative opportunities to participate in similar activities at a more suitable time, while taking into account their health and academic progress.
