Kolkata, Sept. 14 -- The deadlock at Surendranath Law College over attendance requirements for the end-semester examinations continued on Monday, with no classes being held despite the administration's decision to conduct special classes from 6.30 am. Vice-Principal Mohammadi Tarannum also stayed away from the college and worked from home.
The college issued three notices on Sunday night announcing special classes from Monday to help students meet the mandatory 65 percent attendance requirement under Bar Council of India regulations.
The notices directed non-teaching staff to report by 6.15 am to open the classrooms and main gate, while teachers were instructed to record attendance strictly through the enterprise resource planning (ERP) system.
However, no classes were held on Monday. A small number of students reached the college but left without attending them. Students said the notice was issued around 11 pm on Sunday, leaving them little time to make arrangements to reach the college.
Third-year student Nilanjana Bhattacharya said students had been told that Tarannum would attend the college on Monday, but she did not come and no teachers arrived.
Tarannum said she had contacted Calcutta University and sought a meeting on Tuesday to discuss attendance records and students' eligibility for the examinations. She said arrangements were being made to allow eligible students to complete their attendance requirements.
