India, July 29 -- A moderate spell of rain on Tuesday afternoon brought traffic to a crawl across Noida and Ghaziabad, inundating key roads, stranding commuters and schoolchildren, and exposing persistent drainage failures in several parts of the twin cities. Noida recorded 56 mm of rainfall by 5.30 pm, with severe waterlogging reported near Mahamaya flyover, Chilla, and sectors 19, 34, 37 and 100. In Sector 19 and Barola, children were seen wading through knee-deep sewage-mixed water after school. Traffic snarled near the Mahamaya flyover around 3 pm after a car got stranded in the flooded underpass between the furniture market and Sector 94. Commuters pushed the vehicle to the roadside to ease congestion. The DSC Road stretch between Botanical Garden and GIP Mall, Sector 62 and NH-9 also remained submerged. A nearly 50-metre portion of the central verge near Sector 16 Metro station collapsed during the showers, prompting the Noida Authority to begin repair work. Taking serious note of the situation, Noida Authority CEO Krishna Karunesh dismissed junior engineer Parth Rathore and supervisor Mange Ram for negligence in Barola village. Adverse entries were issued against two managers, while a contractor was fined Rs 5 lakh and served a show-cause notice over poor-quality civic work.
