Balurghat, Oct. 11 -- The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Sunday took Majibur Rahman, arrested in connection with his alleged links with the Assam module of Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), to Assam for further interrogation after a special court granted five days' transit remand. His wife was also questioned during the investigation.

An NIA team from Guwahati reached Majibur's residence at Kushkari in Banshihari block of South Dinajpur district on Saturday and questioned him and his wife for several hours. A large police contingent cordoned off the house during the operation.

According to sources, Majibur allegedly developed links with members of the banned outfit through various social media groups while he was a student. After a case relating to alleged terror links was registered against him in Assam in January, he reportedly left his home and went into hiding. Sources claimed that he later took shelter in Delhi with a woman known to him and married her. Investigators are examining the woman's role and her alleged knowledge of the organisation's activities.

On Thursday night, a special team led by Gangarampur Sub-Divisional Police Officer Shubhatosh Sarkar picked up Majibur and his wife from a hideout in Bihar. They were subsequently brought to Banshihari Police Station.

Sources said an NIA team had visited Majibur's house around 10 days earlier. His father, Mizanur Rahman, had reportedly denied having any contact with his son at the time. The agency later traced the couple's location and conducted the operation in Bihar.

After more than four hours of questioning on Saturday, the NIA arrested Majibur and took him to Banshihari police station. Investigators are also looking into the seizure of his laptop and mobile phone. Local sources said some documents related to the investigation were brought from a neighbouring house during the questioning.

Central forces were deployed in Kushkari. The NIA team left for Assam with Majibur on Sunday morning for further interrogation.

A district police officer said: "The NIA team from Assam questioned the accused at his residence and arrested him. The district police are extending all necessary cooperation to the central agency in the investigation."

Majibur's father, Mizanur Rahman, said: "My son has been arrested. I request the administration to give him an opportunity to return to the mainstream."
