
New Delhi, June 9 -- Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has launched a Master of Science (MSc) in Climate Change, becoming the first open university in India to offer a postgraduate programme dedicated to the subject.
The two-year programme has been introduced in response to growing concerns over the impact of climate change on ecosystems, economies and public well-being, and aims to equip learners with the knowledge required to address environmental and sustainability challenges.
Open to graduates from any discipline, the programme carries 80 credits and adopts a multidisciplinary approach. Key areas of study include climate science, climate risks, adaptation and mitigation strategies, environmental governance, sustainable development, water resources, energy systems, agriculture, biodiversity, disaster risk reduction, waste management, circular economy, public health and ecosystem restoration.
The course is coordinated by Dr V. Venkatramanan and Prof Shachi Shah. Students who successfully complete the first year will have the option of receiving a Post Graduate Diploma in Climate Change (PGDCCC).
According to IGNOU, the programme is designed to develop professionals capable of contributing to climate resilience and sustainability initiatives through science-based approaches.
