Malda, July 6 -- In a major initiative to strengthen policing and improve public outreach in the Indo-Bangladesh border belt, the Malda district police have proposed the creation of three new police stations and three new police outposts. The proposal has been sent to the West Bengal government and if approved, is expected to significantly enhance law enforcement, surveillance and public service delivery in the district's sensitive border areas.
According to Malda Superintendent of Police Anupam Singh, the existing police outposts at Kumbhira in Baishnabnagar, Golapganj in Kaliachak and Bulbulchandi in Habibpur have been proposed for upgradation into full-fledged police stations. In addition, new police outposts have been proposed at Lukochuri in English Bazar, Jajail in Habibpur and Jagadala in Bamangola.
Speaking about the proposal, SP Singh said: "The objective is to ensure faster police services in the border areas and strengthen coordination between the police, the Border Security Force and local residents. Increased police presence will improve surveillance and law enforcement in these sensitive regions."
The district police have also sought the sanction of 20 to 25 additional police officers and more than 50 police personnel to staff the proposed establishments. According to officials, the increased manpower will help intensify patrolling, improve response time to emergencies and strengthen crime prevention efforts.
"Once these police stations and outposts become operational, policing in the border belt will become more effective.
It will help curb cross-border smuggling and other illegal activities while also fostering better relations between the police and the public," SP Singh added.
Police officials believe the proposal, once approved, will not only reinforce security along the international border but also make policing more accessible to residents living in remote border villages, ensuring quicker assistance and a stronger sense of safety.
