Kolkata, May 25 -- Neelam Meena has been appointed as the new Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal, succeeding Manoj Kumar Agarwal. A 1998-batch IAS officer of the West Bengal cadre, Meena has served in several key administrative positions during her career.

Since February 2024, she had been serving as Principal Secretary of the Consumer Affairs Department. In the past, she has held important administrative positions including Principal Secretary, Secretary, Private Secretary, District Collector and Magistrate, Joint Secretary, Chief Executive Officer and Additional District Magistrate.

Following the Assembly elections, Agarwal was appointed as the Chief Secretary of Bengal, replacing Dushyant Nariala. The state government had sent a panel of three names to the Election Commission for the appointment of the next CEO. Besides Meena, the list included the names of Tanmay Chakraborty and Moumita Godara Basu. Following due procedure, a panel comprising the Chief Election Commissioner and the two Election Commissioners selected Meena for the post. Meena's name was the first in the three names that was forwarded to the apex poll body.
