NEW DELHI, May 14 -- The New Delhi Municipal Council on Thursday announced a series of sustainability-focused initiatives, including concessions for electric vehicles, shuttle bus services for employees and restrictions on the purchase of fuel-based vehicles, as part of efforts to promote environmentally responsible governance in the Capital.
Chairing a high-level meeting at Palika Kendra, NDMC Vice-Chairperson Kuljeet Singh Chahal said the measures were inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for sustainable development and aligned with appeals
made by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
Among the key announcements was a 50 per cent concession in parking charges for electric vehicles at NDMC-managed parking facilities from next week. The civic body also decided not to procure any new petrol, diesel or CNG vehicles for one year, signalling a shift towards cleaner mobility solutions.
To reduce fuel consumption and traffic congestion, NDMC will begin shuttle bus services for employees from Friday, initially covering four residential colonies including Sarojini Nagar, Laxmibai Nagar and Chanakyapuri. Officials said the network would later be expanded to 14 locations with the deployment of 16 buses.
The civic body further directed that all officers and Heads of Departments use public transport every Monday, while shared vehicles would be utilised for official inspections and field visits. Greater use of bicycles and e-mobility options will also be encouraged.
NDMC said online meetings, video conferencing and selective work-from-home arrangements for employees would be promoted to minimise travel and improve energy efficiency. Awareness campaigns involving Resident Welfare Associations and market bodies are also planned to encourage sustainable living practices across
NDMC areas.
