India, April 23 -- The New Delhi Municipal Council on Wednesday organised a large-scale tree plantation drive at Nehru Park to mark Earth Day, bringing together foreign dignitaries, civic officials, and members of the public under the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign. The initiative, aligned with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeks to promote environmental consciousness through public participation while encouraging citizens to plant trees in the name of their mothers. Vice Chairperson Kuljeet Singh Chahal, who led the programme, described the campaign as both an environmental and emotional initiative. "Plant a tree today, nurture it tomorrow, and gift a greener future to the coming generations," he said, highlighting the importance of sustained ecological responsibility.
The plantation drive witnessed participation from representatives of several embassies and high commissions, including those from Poland, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Portugal, Seychelles, the Philippines, and Guyana. Officials said the presence of international delegates underscored the role of global cooperation in addressing environmental challenges. Chahal noted that the campaign extends beyond symbolic plantation efforts, aiming to evolve into a sustained mass movement. He added that regular plantation drives are being conducted across NDMC areas, including weekly initiatives, to ensure long-term impact. Foreign dignitaries present at the event appreciated the Council's efforts, stating that such initiatives not only contribute to environmental protection but also foster stronger diplomatic and cultural ties. Senior officials from NDMC's horticulture, health, civil, and electrical departments, along with teachers and students from NDMC schools, also participated in the drive.
