India, May 18 -- The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) on Sunday declared Jor Bagh as its next "Anupam Colony" under its sustainable waste management initiative aimed at promoting decentralised solid waste practices and community participation. The announcement was made by NDMC Vice-Chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal during a plantation drive organised under the "#EkPedMaaKeNaam_OnSunday" campaign in the residential colony. Residents, RWAs, senior citizens and NDMC officials participated in the event by planting saplings in the name of their mothers. Speaking on the occasion, Chahal said the "Anupam Colony" initiative focuses on 100 per cent waste segregation at source, on-site composting, recycling and decentralised waste management to create cleaner and greener residential neighbourhoods. He said the initiative also encourages greater citizen participation and reduces waste transportation costs. Also Read - Fuel-saving push: Delhi bats for WFH in pvt sector, carpooling... With the inclusion of Jor Bagh, colonies such as Satya Sadan Officers Flats, Bharti Nagar, Aradhana Colony, Bapu Dham Colony, New Moti Bagh and Kaka Nagar have already been developed under the model. Calling the plantation campaign a "mass movement of emotional and social responsibility", Chahal said NDMC had prepared a year-long Green Calendar under which plantation drives would be held every Sunday across New Delhi. Departments including horticulture, sanitation, roads, drainage and water supply would jointly monitor the upkeep of saplings, he added. The campaign, inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam" initiative, seeks to link environmental conservation with public participation and civic responsibility.
