Kolkata, May 12 -- Former Fire and Emergency Services minister, Sujit Bose, on Tuesday was remanded to Enforcement Directorate (ED) custody for 10 days after he was produced at the Bankshall Court.
Sujit, a former minister in Mamata Banerjee's Cabinet and also the former MLA of Bidhannagar, was summoned multiple times by the ED in connection with the investigation of the municipal recruitment corruption case. But he had skipped the summons and had moved the Calcutta High Court seeking additional time, citing his busy schedule during the election campaign. However, on the court's order, Sujit appeared before the ED officials on May 1. The former MLA was again summoned by the central agency for interrogation on Monday.
Accordingly, on Monday morning, Sujit, accompanied by his son Samudra Bose and his lawyer, went to the ED office. There, Sujit was questioned for more than 10 hours before he was taken into custody.
On Tuesday, ED submitted before the court that while checking the bank accounts of Sujit and his family members, transactions worth crores of rupees were found. Also, during the COVID situation, when lockdown was initiated across the country, transactions worth crores of rupees were found in the bank account of Sujit's restaurant. Apart from this, ED claimed that they have traces of digital evidence of Sujit's recommendation for several job seekers. After the hearing, the court remanded Sujit to ED custody till May 21.
Earlier, on October 10 last year, the ED had conducted searches at the restaurant owned by Sujit's son, the former minister's office and the residences of South Dum Dum Municipality vice-chairman Netai Dutta, a chartered accountant, a businessman and several others. The agency had then claimed that several incriminating documents and around Rs 45 lakh in cash were seized during the raids.
Sujit had dismissed the allegations as politically motivated and claimed that central agencies were being used to put pressure on the TMC ahead of the 2026 Assembly
elections.
He also alleged that despite the ED filing a chargesheet in the case earlier without mentioning his name, the agency continued to target him.
