India, July 27 -- The Madhya Pradesh Building Development Corporation (MPBDC) is embracing emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Building Information Modelling (BIM), 3D printing and precast construction to transform the way public infrastructure is planned, executed and monitored. In an interaction with Millennium Post, Managing Director of the MPBDC, Sibi Chakravarthy, a 2008 batch IAS officer, said the corporation is working to position Madhya Pradesh at the forefront of sustainable and technology-driven infrastructure development by integrating innovation with environmental responsibility.
"We are not merely constructing buildings; we are creating future-ready infrastructure that is efficient, sustainable and digitally managed throughout its lifecycle," he said. Chakravarthy said that among the key initiatives being pursued by MPBDC is the exploration of 3D printing technology for construction. Following a detailed study at IIT Madras, the corporation is assessing the feasibility of deploying the technology in upcoming projects to reduce construction time, improve quality and enhance resource efficiency. The corporation is also scaling up the use of precast construction systems, which allow building components to be manufactured in controlled environments and assembled on-site. The technology is expected to significantly shorten project timelines while maintaining higher quality standards, the MD said.
A major pillar of MPBDC's innovation strategy is the adoption of Building Information Modelling. BIM has been implemented across projects to enable real-time monitoring of physical and financial progress, design coordination, project delays and other critical parameters, he added. According to him, digitalisation has fundamentally changed the corporation's functioning. Processes ranging from Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) and technical approvals to billing, electronic measurement books and extension-of-time approvals have been integrated into a digital workflow, reducing paperwork and improving efficiency.
The corporation has also introduced AI-enabled camera monitoring through its Project Management System (PMS), allowing continuous surveillance of construction activities and strengthening quality control mechanisms," Chakravarthy said. "The PMS has helped create a largely paperless and fileless work environment, enhancing transparency and accountability in project execution," he further added. Sustainability remains a central focus of MPBDC's infrastructure strategy. Several projects undertaken by the corporation are being developed in accordance with GRIHA and Indian Green Building Council standards, with many securing 3-Star, 4-Star and 5-Star green building ratings.
