Raiganj, June 8 -- The long-pending construction of a stadium at Rasidpur in Kaliyaganj is set to resume after Raiganj MP and chairman-in-charge of Kaliyaganj Municipality, Kartik Chandra Paul, sanctioned Rs 90 lakh from his MPLAD fund for the project.
The development comes shortly after Paul assumed charge as chairman-in-charge of the municipality on June 5, following the resignation of former chairman Biswajit Kundu and vice-chairman Jaya Roy of the Trinamool Congress-led board. The state Urban Development Department issued a special order appointing Paul to the post.
The project was initially launched in 2020 when Paul was serving as chairman of the municipality. Around Rs 30 lakh from the Border Area Development Fund was spent on constructing a portion of the boundary wall and part of the gallery. However, the work remained stalled for more than five years, leaving the site abandoned and allegedly vulnerable to anti-social activities.
Local residents and sports enthusiasts have welcomed the move.
Gautam Kar, a sports lover from Kaliyaganj, said: "The absence of a proper ground had created difficulties for students and youths preparing for recruitment in the police and armed forces. After taking charge, our MP has allotted Rs 90 lakh for the stadium. We are happy with this initiative."
Kartik Paul said: "The stadium was a long-standing demand of local residents. Construction work will restart soon."
