Kolkata, July 30 -- The depression over the Bay of Bengal has weakened considerably, but the rain is far from over. The weather office said on Friday that active monsoon conditions will continue to trigger rain across Kolkata and most districts of south Bengal over the next few days.
On Thursday, Kolkata witnessed spells of heavy rain at intervals across different parts of the city. Because the rainfall occurred in phases, water that accumulated in several areas had time to drain away between spells, preventing prolonged waterlogging in many localities.
For the next 24 hours, Kolkata is expected to remain mostly cloudy with scattered light to moderate rain and thundershowers during different parts of the day.
While heavy rain is unlikely in the city on Friday, residents have been advised to remain cautious during thunderstorms. The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 32 degrees Celsius and the minimum around 27 degrees, with humidity continuing to cause discomfort.
Most districts of South Bengal are likely to receive rain, with South 24-Parganas, East Midnapore, Purulia, Bankura, West Burdwan, Birbhum and Jhargram expected to see relatively higher rainfall activity. Gusty winds of 30-40 kmph may affect coastal and adjoining districts and intermittent showers could disrupt traffic during peak office hours.
North Bengal is also expected to remain under the influence of active monsoon conditions. Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Cooch Behar are likely to receive light to moderate rain, with heavy rain possible in one or two places.
