Malda, June 29 -- A major cross-border mobile phone smuggling attempt was foiled by Habibpur Police in Malda with the assistance of the Border Security Force (BSF), leading to the seizure of 216 mobile phones and the arrest of four alleged smugglers.

According to police, the accused have been identified as Binoy Soren, Subhakar Soren, Prabhakar Soren and Munshi Soren, all residents of Suchal Mohammadpur village under Jajail Gram Panchayat in Habibpur. Acting on a specific tip-off, police, along with personnel from the BSF's 88 Battalion, Harishchandrapur Border Outpost, conducted a raid at a house in the village on Sunday afternoon.

During the operation, officers recovered 216 mobile phones of various leading brands, reportedly stocked for illegal smuggling into Bangladesh. The estimated market value of the seized consignment is around Rs 4 lakh. The four suspects were taken into custody on charges related to cross-border smuggling. Police believe the mobile phones were meant to be transported across the international border through an organised smuggling network.

The accused were produced before the Malda District Court on Monday, where investigators sought police custody to facilitate further interrogation and identify other members of the racket.
