Alipurduar, Oct. 8 -- Acting on the Chief Minister's instructions, state Information and Cultural Affairs Department adviser Mithun Chakraborty on Thursday began visiting tourist destinations in Alipurduar to assess the district's tourism potential and identify areas requiring infrastructure development.
Chakraborty arrived in Alipurduar for the first time since being appointed adviser to the department. He spent Wednesday night at the Malangi Forest Bungalow near Hasimara before beginning his tour on Thursday morning. He visited several tourist spots and held discussions with officials of the district administration and Forest department.
"The state government has plans to develop Alipurduar into a major tourism hub in the coming days. With that objective, I am visiting these places personally to assess what tourism infrastructure is available, where development is needed and what additional facilities can be provided for tourists," Chakraborty said.
He first visited Bhutanghat in Kumargram block and went on a jungle safari. He was accompanied by Forest minister Manoj Kumar Oraon, BJP Alipurduar district president Mithu Das and Forest department officials. Chakraborty also held a meeting with officials to discuss forest-based tourism and infrastructure development. "I visited the area and it is a very beautiful place," he said after visiting Bhutanghat.
He later visited the Poro tourist centre in Kalchini block and interacted with local tribal communities, asking them to inform authorities about their requirements.
Minister of State for Home Affairs Bishal Lama and administrative officials were also present. Chakraborty later visited Sisamara adjacent to Jaldapara National Park as part of his tour.
