Jalpaiguri, July 9 -- The hanging body of a 23-year-old housewife, who had been missing since Tuesday afternoon, was recovered from inside a club building in Dhupguri on Wednesday, triggering shock and prompting a police investigation into the mysterious death.

The deceased, identified as Ranjita Roy, was a resident of Niranjan Pat in the Gilandi area under Magurmari-I Gram Panchayat of Dhupguri Block.

According to family members, Ranjita had gone to a bank with her husband and their infant child on Tuesday.

After returning home, she reportedly said some banking work was still pending and left alone to visit the bank again. However, she never returned. When repeated calls to her mobile phone went unanswered as it was switched off, her family searched for her and later informed the police.

On Wednesday, local farmers discovered her hanging body inside a club in the Thakurpat area under Dhupguri Police Station and immediately alerted the police.

Police recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem examination.

"We are unable to understand how this happened. She had left home saying she was going to the bank.

We searched everywhere, but today her hanging body was recovered," said Ambika Roy, a family member.
