Cooch Behar, Sept. 2 -- Five minors have been accused of gang-raping a minor girl in the Dinhata police station area. The girl was later admitted at Dinhata Sub-divisional Hospital. She is currently undergoing treatment and her condition is reportedly stable. Till the time of filing the report, no arrests were made.
The girl's mother had lodged a written complaint with Dinhata Police Station on Tuesday night, following which police launched an investigation. All five accused have been mentioned as minors in the complaint.
The girl's mother has also alleged that BJP leader Sabana Khatun asked the family to remain silent about the incident in exchange for money. The allegation could not be independently verified, and Khatun's response was unavailable. The incident has sparked a political debate.
The Trinamool Congress, on X, posted "This is beyond Horrifying! The @BJP4Bengal government promised women's safety & security before the polls. What happened to those promises after the illicit victory? Women are increasingly being left unsafe - no one seems to be spared, not even little girls. A government that shields perpetrators instead of ensuring justice is failing its most basic duty. Protect victims. Arrest the accused. Ensure justice. No excuse can justify silence!"
Dinhata MLA Ajay Roy said: "I am not aware of the matter. Let the Trinamool Congress first look at itself. Under this government, criminals will not get a break.
Those who commit crimes will be punished appropriately." Police have started an investigation.
