New Delhi, Nov. 3 -- Delhi Metro recorded more than 80.54 lakh passenger boardings on Monday, November 2, marking an increase of over 8.3 lakh compared with the corresponding Monday last week, as pollution-control restrictions encouraged greater use of public transport.

According to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), the network registered 80,54,968 passenger boardings on November 2, against 72,24,094 on the previous Monday, reflecting a significant rise in ridership.

The increase comes amid the implementation of Stage-I measures under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) and restrictions on the movement of certain vehicles that do not meet BS-VI emission standards in Delhi. The measures are expected to have prompted more commuters to opt for the Metro instead of private vehicles. To accommodate the additional passenger movement, DMRC is operating 40 additional train trips across its network. The corporation has also made arrangements to facilitate commuters at stations and said further measures would be introduced depending on passenger requirements.

The rise in ridership comes as authorities step up efforts to reduce vehicular emissions and encourage people to use public

transport amid deteriorating air quality in the national capital.
