India, Aug. 18 -- Sanitation workers and auto-tipper drivers from across Delhi staged a protest at Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital on Monday, demanding Rs 1 crore compensation and a permanent government job for one member of the family of a 27-year-old sanitation worker who was stabbed to death while collecting garbage in Kalyanpuri. The protestors gathered at the hospital, where the body of Anil was kept, and raised slogans demanding the immediate arrest of the accused, compensation for his family and action against the private company that had engaged him. Delhi Police and paramilitary personnel were deployed at the hospital as workers refused to allow the family to take the body for the last rites until their demands were addressed. "We will not allow the last rites until our demands are met. Auto-tippers will remain off the roads across Delhi," he said, adding that vehicles remained off the roads in several areas as part of the protest. Police said a man has been arrested in connection with the killing, but his identity has not been disclosed. The motive behind the killing is yet to be ascertained, and all possible angles are being examined. He was rushed to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. A purported CCTV video of the incident circulating on social media shows a man in a yellow T-shirt allegedly approaching Anil after a brief verbal spat and stabbing him in the stomach. Police said they are examining CCTV footage and other evidence to establish the sequence of events and determine the motive. Following the incident, Anil's colleagues had staged a dharna demanding his killer's immediate arrest and compensation for his family. The MCD on Sunday said it would ensure compensation for Anil's family. Its representatives also visited the family and conveyed the assurance. Police said further investigation is underway.
