India, Aug. 30 -- The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will deploy additional machinery at the Bhalswa landfill to accelerate the removal of legacy waste, Mayor Pravesh Wahi said during an inspection of the site on Saturday. The Mayor reviewed the ongoing biomining operations and directed officials to ensure that the disposal of accumulated waste is completed within the stipulated timeframe. According to the civic body, nearly 15,000 tonnes of waste is currently being processed every day at the landfill. The mound of legacy waste at Bhalswa has reduced considerably, with around four to five lakh tonnes still remaining, Wahi said. He instructed officials to increase the pace of waste processing and ensure that the remaining legacy waste is cleared on schedule. The Mayor directed officials to work towards processing fresh waste at twice the current rate. The civic body is also working on setting up a waste-to-energy plant at Bhalswa, which is expected to provide additional capacity for handling waste and support the landfill remediation process. Material recovered during biomining is being segregated, with inert material being used to fill low-lying areas, according to the MCD. The inspection was attended by North Zone Deputy Chairman Sanjay Tyagi, nominated member Rajpal Rana, Additional Commissioner Arun Kumar Mishra, Engineer-in-Chief K.K. Sharma and other senior officials. Wahi also urged Delhi residents to segregate waste into four categories and dispose of it responsibly, saying that sustained waste segregation and proper disposal were essential to keeping the city clean and hygienic.
