New Delhi, Oct. 9 -- The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Friday removed around 42 structures built over an existing drain in Raghubir Nagar's B-1 and K blocks, reclaiming 505 square metres of land and paving the way for the construction of a new drainage system.
The demolition drive was carried out by the MCD's West Zone team in coordination with the Delhi Police in Ward 94. According to the civic body, the encroachments had been obstructing the proposed drain construction project, which is to be funded through the Chief Minister's Development Fund (CMDF).
The corporation said several multi-storey structures had been built over the existing drain, preventing construction work from proceeding. Despite multiple notices issued to remove the encroachments and facilitate the project, the structures had remained in place, prompting the civic body to initiate demolition action. During Friday's operation, MCD field staff, assisted by the Delhi Police, removed the structures occupying the drain and adjoining land. The clearance of 505 square metres is expected to facilitate the next stage of construction, although the corporation did not specify a timeline for the completion of the project.
The action forms part of the civic body's enforcement efforts against unauthorised occupation of public land and obstructions to essential infrastructure projects.
The MCD said the operation concluded peacefully with the cooperation of police personnel and field staff. The corporation has maintained that clearing the encroachments was necessary to ensure that the proposed drainage work could proceed.
The project is significant for the locality as the removal of structures over the existing drain will allow construction work to move forward. However, the civic body has yet to announce when work on the new drain will begin or when it is expected to be completed.
