India, Aug. 11 -- The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has undertaken a 9.73-crore project to rejuvenate and beautify Naini Lake in Model Town under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0 scheme. The development work was inaugurated on Sunday in the presence of Cabinet Minister Kapil Mishra, MLA Ashok Goyal, Area Councillor Vikesh Sethi and Deputy Commissioner Mohit Bansal. The project, being implemented in Ward No. 68 of the Keshav Puram Zone, is aimed at improving the lake's environmental and recreational value while promoting the sustainable reuse of treated wastewater. Also Read - Delhi Assembly passes bill to amend Fire Service Act to streamline fire safety regulations As part of the project, treated sewage treatment plant (STP) water from the Coronation Pillar STP will be conveyed to Naini Lake. The excess treated water will subsequently be used for irrigation of nearby municipal parks, according to the MCD. The civic body said the initiative would help improve water management in the area by promoting the reuse of treated wastewater for non-potable purposes. The planned works include the installation of decorative lighting, horticultural development and remodelling of the peripheral reinforced cement concrete (RCC) drain around the lake. Two musical fountains will also be installed as part of the beautification measures. The MCD said the interventions were intended to improve the overall appearance and functionality of the lake and create a more attractive public space for residents. The rejuvenation of Naini Lake is also expected to strengthen its role as a recreational and environmental asset in the Model Town area. The project is being undertaken at a contractual cost of 9.73 crore. According to the civic body, the work is scheduled to be completed by July 2027. The project comes as the MCD undertakes infrastructure and environmental improvement works under AMRUT 2.0, which focuses on improving urban water management and related civic amenities.
