Kolkata, July 16 -- Former minister and senior Trinamool Congress leader Manish Gupta has announced his decision to resign from the party, saying he has "nothing more to do" in the organisation. Although he is yet to formally submit his resignation, Gupta said he would send his resignation letter to Mamata Banerjee soon

Gupta's announcement comes ahead of the July 21 Martyrs' Day programme and amid the organisational crisis within the TMC following the party's electoral setback. His decision has also revived debate over his alleged role in the 1993 July 21 police firing, when he was the state's Home Secretary. Opposition leaders have long questioned his role in the incident and his subsequent induction into the TMC in 2011, when Mamata Banerjee brought him into the party and made him an MLA and minister after coming to power.

The issue recently resurfaced after NCPI leader Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar questioned why no investigation was conducted against Gupta and wrote to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari seeking a fresh probe into the 1993 firing.

Speaking to the media, Gupta also praised Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, calling him "an extremely efficient administrator", though he did not reveal his future political plans.
