India, July 22 -- In a major breakthrough against insurgency in Manipur, 46 active cadres of the banned Kangleipak Communist Party (People's War Group) surrendered before Chief Minister Y. Khemchand Singh at the Mantripukhri Garrison of the Assam Rifles in Imphal East on Tuesday, marking one of the largest mass surrenders by the outfit. The cadres laid down 28 sophisticated weapons, including AK rifles, INSAS rifles, Self Loading Rifles, pistols, carbines, rocket-propelled grenade launchers, along with a large quantity of ammunition and explosives, officials said. The surrender ceremony was attended by the state's Home Minister, senior government officials, top Army, Assam Rifles, CRPF and Manipur Police officers, MLAs and other dignitaries. The People's War Group faction has long been involved in anti-social and anti-national activities across the valley districts of Imphal East, Imphal West and Kakching. While small groups of five to 12 cadres had surrendered in previous years, the simultaneous surrender of 46 members is unprecedented for the faction.
