Kolkata, May 25 -- The Cyber Crime police station of Kolkata Police has arrested a man for allegedly circulating objectionable and defamatory content targeting Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and several senior BJP leaders, including women leaders of the party.

According to police sources, BJP leader Priyanka Tibrewal lodged a complaint on May 21 alleging that a video containing derogatory remarks and abusive language against Adhikari, Union minister Dilip Ghosh and BJP leader Sukanta Majumdar was being circulated on social media. The complaint also alleged that the video made objectionable insinuations regarding alleged illicit relationships involving prominent women BJP leaders.

During the investigation, police traced Partha Nag, a resident of Behala, who allegedly uploaded the video on his Facebook profile several years ago before later deleting it. During interrogation, Nag allegedly revealed that another person, identified as Rajesh Chakraborty, had induced him to create and upload the video in 2023 in exchange for small payments ranging between Rs 500 and Rs 2,000.

Police said Chakraborty appeared before investigators on Sunday following a summons but allegedly failed to cooperate with the probe.

Investigators also found that he had allegedly deleted WhatsApp chat records exchanged with Nag. He was subsequently arrested and produced before the Bankshall Court on Monday, which remanded him to police custody till May 27.
