Cooch Behar, Sept. 17 -- Police have detained a man after Bangladeshi currency worth around Rs 2.5 lakh was allegedly recovered from his possession in the Mekhliganj area. The man, identified as Paritosh Roy, a resident of the Kuchlibari police station area, is being questioned to determine the source and intended destination of the currency.
According to police sources, Roy was spotted loitering suspiciously in a market area late Wednesday night. Acting on a tip-off, personnel of the BSF's 178th Battalion detained him and allegedly recovered the Bangladeshi currency from his possession.
The BSF handed Roy over to Mekhliganj police on Thursday. Police are now interrogating him to ascertain where he obtained the currency and where he intended to take it.
Investigators are also looking into the circumstances under which he was carrying such a large amount of Bangladeshi currency and whether anyone else was involved.
