Kolkata, Oct. 14 -- Former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and MAITC MP Abhishek Banerjee on Wednesday condemned the arrest of two leaders of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, who were remanded to five days in judicial custody by a Delhi court following their arrest over alleged trespassing at Jantar Mantar.
Mamata strongly condemned the arrests, calling them an attempt to intimidate and silence an entire generation. "These moments are about us all, pledging and standing up to fight unitedly to protect our great democracy," she said in a post on X, urging people to stand together to safeguard constitutional rights.
Claiming that 14,000 people in Bengal were facing police and political atrocities, the former Chief Minister said democratic rights were under threat in several parts of the country. She assured young people of her support, declaring: "Your Didi is with you - today and forever!"
Abhishek criticised the arrest of Indians for unfurling and waving the national flag in their own country. "The so-called biggest nationalists are now arresting Indians for unfurling and waving the Tricolour in their own country, an act which, according to the Union Government constitutes a breach of peace," he wrote on X, describing it as the BJP's "new Pakistanified Bharat".
Das and Ranka were arrested after allegedly climbing a locked gate and crossing barricades to enter Jantar Mantar. The two were produced before a magistrate on Wednesday and remanded to judicial custody for five days.
