Malda, Oct. 23 -- Police have arrested two more persons, including the prime accused, in connection with the murder of BJP worker Samir Ghosh in Ramkeli under English Bazar Police Station in Malda. The arrests were made late on Thursday night from the Mahadipur area. The accused have been identified as Shatru Ghosh and Chhoton Ghosh, who are alleged to be associated with the Trinamool Congress.
With these arrests, the total number of people held in the case has risen to three. Police had earlier arrested Ranjan Ghosh on the night of the incident. The arrested persons have been produced before the Malda district court on Friday, where police sought their custody for further interrogation.
Samir Ghosh, 27, was allegedly hacked with sharp weapons and shot dead on Dashami night, triggering tension in Ramkeli.
Several other people were also injured in the incident and are undergoing treatment at Malda Medical College and Hospital.
The deceased's family had alleged that the attack stemmed from a prolonged political rivalry between BJP and Trinamool Congress workers in the area. Samir's brother, Bibek Ghosh, had claimed that the assailants first attacked his brother with sharp weapons before shooting him to ensure his death.
Police have been investigating the case from multiple angles, including a possible connection with an earlier murder. In 2025, Samir's father, Lal Chand Ghosh, was accused of murdering Subal Ghosh. Shatru Ghosh, a relative of Subal, was reportedly a key accused in that case. Following the murder, police and central forces were deployed in Ramkeli to prevent further violence.
Malda Superintendent of Police Anupam Singh said: "Patrolling is continuing in the area with Central forces to maintain law and order. Further investigation is underway to identify and apprehend anyone else involved in the crime."
