Malda, Sept. 17 -- Eighteen Bangladeshi nationals detained in different parts of the country have been brought to Malda for the process of repatriation. They arrived at Malda Town station on Wednesday aboard the Howrah-Balurghat Express and were taken to the holding centre in English Bazar under tight police security.
According to police, the group comprises 14 women and four men. Ten of the detainees were held in Rajasthan, two in Hyderabad, one in Maharashtra, while five were detained in Malda. They were allegedly staying in India without valid documents. Malda Superintendent of Police Anupam Singh said, "The identity and nationality of the detainees are being verified. The necessary legal and administrative procedures will be completed before further action is taken as per rules."
Police said the detainees claimed to be residents of different parts of Bangladesh. Their documents and identities are being verified before arrangements are made for their return.
