Kolkata, July 26 -- After a largely dry Sunday, South Bengal is likely to see a significant change in weather conditions from Monday as a fresh low-pressure area is expected to form over the Bay of Bengal, bringing heavy rain to several districts, the weather Office said.
The system is likely to intensify over the north-west Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas of Odisha and West Bengal, triggering widespread rain across the Gangetic belt.
East Midnapore, West Midnapore and South 24-Parganas are expected to be among the worst-affected districts, with the possibility of very heavy rain. An orange alert has been issued for these areas.
Kolkata and its adjoining districts, including Howrah, Hooghly and North 24-Parganas, may also experience intermittent showers amid generally cloudy skies. Heavy rain is also likely in Jhargram, West Burdwan, Bankura and Purulia. The weather office has warned that heavy rain over a short period could lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas and disrupt road traffic.
The developing system may also make the sea conditions rough, with gusty winds of 45-55 kmph expected over the north Bay and coastal waters. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea and fishing boats and trawlers have been asked to return to safer locations.
Rain is likely to ease gradually from Tuesday as the system weakens after moving inland. No heavy-rain warning has been issued for South Bengal after Thursday,
though localised thundershowers may continue.
